Maas, on her grandmothers side, is of the Jewish faith and has publicly stated her pride in her grandmother in 2016 for volunteering at an Israeli army base – “She is 86 and a Holocaust survivor and still volunteers regularly at an Israeli army base. It was very special to have her at my house.”
Maas’ husband is also of the Jewish faith and has described their trip to Israel – “The Wall on Shabbat was one of the coolest experiences, full of joy and energy. I left Israel overflowing with pride. It’s a magical, welcoming place.”

Maas has written characters of LGBTQIA+ representation into her novels, though as received criticism in her earlier novels, in particular ACOTAR series, for poor portrayal of LGBTQIA characters. Maas has never made any direct homophobic comments or shown direct intent to marginalise the community.
