Beliefs
Religion –
Brandon Sanderson is a practicing member of The Mormon Church.
The Mormon Church believes that a New Bible was discovered by Joseph Smith and that through him his church was restored and guided by living prophets and apostles.
The current prophet is Russell M. Nelson whom Sanderson has expressed support towards. Whilst Russell has brought forward some progressive ideas into the Church, in regards to the position of women and people of colour, there is still strong opposition by the church to same sex marriage, though Nelson has repelled policies which explicitly ban LGBTQIA+ members from being part of the church – however, relationships of those of the same nature are expressly forbidden.
Sexuality –
Sanderson had formerly stated that as part of his beliefs as a member of The Mormon Church, he was against same sex relationship.
In a blog post he stated – ‘ “Another note to those who might be reading this who are, themselves, gay. No, I don’t believe that homosexuality can—in many cases, at least—be treated and ‘cured.’ I do believe, however, that impulses of attraction between people of the same gender are something that can and should be resisted, in the same way that my impulses of attraction toward women who are not my wife can and should be resisted. You probably believe differently. I’m okay with that. End note.”
He has since gone on to retract this statement – ‘ I am a practicing and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As part of that, I support the leaders of the church, accept them as my spiritual advisors, and believe they are led by God. That said, on the position of gay rights, I find my own beliefs more liberal than the general tenor of the church. Over the years, through interaction with wonderfully patient members of the LGBTQ+ community, I think I’ve come a long way.My current stance is one of unequivocable support for LGBTQ+ rights. I support gay marriage. I support trans rights, the rights of non-binary people, and I support the rights of trans people to affirm their own identity with love and support. I support anti-discrimination legislation, and have voted consistently along these lines for the last fifteen years.’
